One NFL assistant coach was reportedly arrested recently and faces allegations of assaulting a police officer.
According to Denver’s 9News, Denver Broncos linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite was arrested over the weekend following an altercation at the airport. He was booked on suspicion of second degree assault of a police officer with bail set at $500 on Monday morning.
According to a statement obtained by 9News, a Denver Police officer was on assignment at Denver International Airport when he noticed Wilhoite pull into the 2nd lane of the departure area and left his vehicle unattended. The office informed Wilhoite when he returned that he could not leave his vehicle unattended.
At that point, Wilhoite allegedly told the officer to “shut the (expletive) up” with the officer again telling him he could not leave his vehicle unattended. Wilhoite responded with the same reply as before, after which Wilhoite allegedly approached and bumped chests with the officer.
The officer then allegedly shoved Wilhoite, after which the assistant allegedly punched the officer, which sent the officer to the ground. The officer used his taser as Wilhoite returned to his car per the police, but he was able to drive away after the cycling ended.
“We are aware of a situation involving Michael Wilhoite that occurred Sunday and are in the process of gathering more information,” a Broncos spokesperson said.
Wilhoite is a former player who has spent time as an assistant coach with the New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Chargers and the Broncos.
