The Chicago Bears have fired head coach Matt Eberflus. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and then announced by the organization shortly thereafter.
Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will serve as the interim head coach in Eberflus’s place.
This marks the first time that the Bears have replaced a head coach during the season since 1942. The move comes on the heels of a disastrous Thanksgiving Day loss in which Chicago fell 23-20 to the Detroit Lions. It marked the team’s sixth consecutive loss.
And there’s no question a lot of the heat has been on play-calling by Eberflus, though there are a number of factors that have contributed to the Bears’ misfortune.
General manager Ryan Poles made a public statement following the announcement that Eberflus had been fired, which came not long after the coach’s Friday morning press conference.
“This morning, after meeting with [chairman] George [H. McCaskey] and [President and CEO] Kevin [Warren], we informed Matt of our decision to move in a different direction with the leadership of our football team and the head-coaching position,” Poles said. “I thank Matt for his hard work, professionalism, and dedication to our organization. We extend our gratitude for his commitment to the Chicago Bears and wish him and his family the best moving forward.”
Eberflus will depart Chicago with a 14-32 record across 3 seasons. Chicago is 4-8 this year.
The Bears hit the field next to take on the San Franciso 49ers on the road. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET in Levi’s Stadium on Dec. 8.
