What is Sleeper and why should football fans care?

Sleeper is a daily fantasy sports app (DFS) backed by investors such as American venture capitalist firm Andreessen Horowitz and current and former NBA stars like Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Shane Battier and Baron Davis.

Through Sleeper’s exciting picks platform, you can bundle a few selections of player over/under picks, and you can put real money against those picks.

Sleeper DFS pick’em contests as outlined in this article are legal in these 25 U.S. states: AK, AR, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, KS, KY, MA, MN, NE, NM, NC, ND, OK, OR, RI, SC, SD, TX, UT, VT, WI and WY. The picks contests are also legal in Washington DC.

My picks for NFL Week 1

Christian McCaffrey higher than 0.5 rushing yards. Take the higher option here. McCaffrey faces a tough Pittsburgh defense in Week 1, but the San Francisco star is still almost guaranteed to gain at least 1 yard on the ground. He’s one of the best players in the entire NFL for a reason, and the 49ers will be looking to make a statement on the road to start the 2023 campaign.

Lamar Jackson higher than 271.5 pass+rush yards. The Baltimore Ravens get to start the year against a Houston Texans squad that finished with the second-worst record in the league last year. While I expect the team to be better in 2023, the start of the year could be rough as a new coach, new quarterback and other new pieces work together to improve. Jackson and the Ravens will have no mercy for them in Week 1.

Justin Jefferson higher than 0.5 receiving TDs. The logic for this pick is simple. Jefferson is the best receiver in the league and he’s going against a lackluster Tampa Bay squad. If Jefferson is going to have another outstanding season, it’ll start in Week 1. Look for him to find the end zone at least once against a team that is in transition after the retirement of Tom Brady.

How many picks should you make?

Sleeper uses a dynamic multiplier for its pick’em contests. Some over/under picks have a higher multiplier than others based on how likely the picks are to occur within the course of the game.

Still, the general idea here is that the more correct picks you make, the more money you can win in each of your contests!

My 3-leg contest, as detailed above, would pay out $29.75 on a $5 entry if I’m correct, a 5.95x multiplier:
