The San Francisco 49ers served up the 1st surprise of the 2021 NFL Draft with the night’s 3rd overall pick. With Alabama’s Mac Jones and Ohio State’s Justin Fields expected by some to come off the board as the 3rd and 4th quarterbacks after Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and BYU’s Zach Wilson went 1st and 2nd overall, the Niners’ front office shook things up as they instead picked Trey Lance out of FCS power North Dakota State.

Lance only played in 1 game in 2020 due to COVID-19, an exhibition win over Central Arkansas. But his 2019 season prior to that made him one of the most interesting prospects in the draft as he threw for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns while recording 0 interceptions, adding 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns on 169 carries. Clearly, even with Jimmy Garropolo still on the roster, San Francisco general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan felt that Lance was the better selection.

Here is some of the reaction on Twitter after Lance became the 2nd NDSU player to be taken in the top 3 of the draft, 5 years after Carson Wentz was taken 2nd overall by the Philadelphia Eagles:
