Kansas online sports betting is now available through a “soft launch” throughout the state, with a full launch expected by next week.
In less than three months after Gov. Laura Kelly (D) signed the state’s bill into law, Kansas has taken its first sports bet. It’s the quickest turnaround from bill signage to first bet, as Kansas needed only 74 days to complete the task. State’s typically take anywhere from eight to 12 months to after a sports betting bill becomes law to take its first bet.
Kansas sports betting is now fully available online and at several casinos.
Kansas soft launch underway
Today’s launch is a “soft launch,” according the Kansas Lottery. So what does that mean exactly? The only thing Kansas sports bettors may find lacking today from the state’s finished sports betting product is a slightly limited catalogue of betting events.
A Kansas Lottery spokesperson said the four state casinos and their online operator partners are only required to take bets on the NFL, MLB, and NCAAF during today’s soft launch. The spokesperson did say the operators would likely offer more betting events than just those three today, but these are the only three event types required during the soft launch.

CLAIM OFFERDespite the potentially limited betting catalogue, the spokesperson noted that no other restrictions would be placed on Kansas sports bettors or the operators during the soft launch period. Customers will be able to access online sportsbook apps with no limitations, register and fund accounts, and use offered promo bets as normal.
The Kansas Lottery has approved six sports betting operators through partnerships with the state’s four casinos. Each casino is allowed to partner with up to three sports betting operators by law.
The Hollywood Casino in Kansas City is currently offering both in-person and online sports betting available through its Barstool Sportsbook partnership.
The Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane is offering both in-person and online sports betting through its FanDuel partnership. Additionally, the Boot Hill Casino and Resort in Dodge City is currently offering online sports betting through DraftKings Sportsbook, with in-person sports betting to be announced at a later date.
Finally, the Kansas Crossing Casino is currently offering online sports betting through BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, and PointsBet, with in-person sports betting starting a later date.
Full launch to take place on Sept. 8
Casinos and online sports betting operators will be required to take more than just NFL, MLB, and NCAAF bets during the full launch of Kansas sports betting on Thursday, Sept. 8.
When at full capacity, casinos will be able to partner with up to 50 locations to install sports betting kiosks. This includes professional sports franchises, of which there is only one in the state, MLS Sporting Kansas City.

CLAIM OFFERThe sports betting bill levies a 10% tax on retail and online sports betting. The law is expected to bring in nearly $10 million annually in taxes, of which 80% will be earmarked to lure professional sports franchises to relocate to the state. This means upwards of $8 million a year could be invested into the specialized “Attracting Professional Sports in Kansas” fund.
Kansas tribes will also be able to amend their gaming compacts to potentially offer online and retail sports betting at their casinos. The amended gaming compacts will have to be approved by Gov. Kelly and the U.S. Department of the Interior.
