Manti Te’o was involved in one of the strangest stories in recent college football history back in 2013, when news broke that he was being catfished online by someone he claimed was his girlfriend.
Now, 9 years later, Netflix has released a documentary chronicling Te’o’s story, titled “UNTOLD: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist.” It came out this week and has already been drawing a lot of interaction on social media.
Below, you can see the trailer for the documentary, which is available to stream on Netflix now:

Te’o comes across as a very sympathetic figure in the documentary, according to reaction on social media. Fans and media members flocked to Twitter to express their support for the former Notre Dame and NFL linebacker:

After watching the Manti Te’o doc, I come away with one thought: I just wish that this whole story could have been told so much sooner.
Manti deserved to find peace faster than he did.

Things I learned from the Manti Te’o documentary.
1. The media owes him an apology.
2. We as a society owe him an apology.
3. The NFL owes him an apology. He has EVERY reason to be bitter and pissed off still, yet he forgives everyone, including Ronaiah, for this.

Serves as a great reminder… you never fully know what people are going through. Right?
Manti was put through the damn ringer but still punched the clock every single day. Amazingly tough-minded person, and a testament to perseverance. (2/2)

Dear Manti Te'o.
Please accept my apology for any joke I ever made about you in the past. You deserved better.#MantiTeo

My 3 takeaways from the Manti Te’o doc:
– Everyone owes him an apology
– If it had happened today, I unfortunately think the internet would’ve reacted the same. Everyone loves the tea, drama, and jokes
– Manti aged veryyy well— Katie Stats (@kpondiscio) August 17, 2022
After watching the Manti Te’o doc on Netflix I gotta say I am so impressed at his positivity through everything. I used to laugh at the jokes too but after seeing the emotional toll it took on him and the selfishness behind the hoax, I’ve changed my mindset. Manti, you’re a beast

Te’o played for the then-San Diego Chargers from 2013 to 2016. He then played for the New Orleans Saints from 2017 to 2019 before ending up with the Chicago Bears in 2020. He hasn’t played in the NFL since then.
