Fans shred NFL refs for controversial unnecessary roughness call involving Kyler Murray
It didn’t take long for controversy to show up during the first Sunday of the 2024 NFL season.
During the Cardinals’ opening game against the Bills, Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray appeared to give himself up on a slide attempt while scrambling out of the pocket. Buffalo cornerback Ja’Marcus Ingram initially went in for a hit but then pulled up and grazed Murray as he was rolling over top of him.

The referees in the game still called an unnecessary roughness penalty on Ingram, resulting in an additional 15 yards for the Cardinals’ offense that extended their drive. Arizona would go on to score the game’s first touchdown on the possession.
Fans, former players and media personalities across the league have been less than pleased with the official’s ruling:
Awful call on Ingram to keep that drive alive and gets the Cardinals a TD.#BillsMafia

We already have a horrible game changing call in the Buffalo Bills vs Arizona Cardinals game ♂️

Weak ass call in the #bills vs #cardinals game. It begins early.

Our first egregious QB-related call of the season in Buffalo where Kyler slides INTO the defender and draws an unnecessary roughness call. You can’t let QB’s slide into defenders, tripping them, causing minimal contact and then call a 15 yarder on the defense. Nope nope nope.

The @AZCardinals were just GIFTED 4pts extra points on one of the WORST CALLS I have seen. Even in real time you could see that. Absolute trash @NFLOfficiating #BillsMafia pic.twitter.com/9TmxEDpfdn

The turnover from Josh is BAD … but in reality this game should be 7-6 (best case) and 6-3 (worst case)
Even with the turnover it should only be 6-0 if not for an absolutely egregious call that gifted the #Cardinals 7 points.
Sting, we are in a hole now. Can’t panic

I can see why the refs might have missed that call…Kyler’s head bounced on the turf but it was from his own momentum, not from the Bills player. Not an excuse but not a good call and the Cards clearly benefitted from it.
