John Mateer has been the most sought-after quarterback in the transfer portal this cycle. The former Washington State QB entered the portal after leading the Cougars to an 8-4 record and throwing for 3,139 yards in 2024.

Mateer’s portal journey didn’t last long as the QB will head to Norman to join the Oklahoma Sooners. He reunites with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, who took the same position at Oklahoma this offseason, leaving Washington State.

“Praise God!! #BoomerSooner,” said the QB in his official announcement on social media. He shared a picture from his high school days in which he stood in front of Memorial Stadium giving a “Horns Down” gesture, sure to be a hit with Sooners fans.

Mateer threw for over 3,000 yards with 29 TDs and 7 INTs in 2024. The dual-threat QB also rushed for 826 yards and 15 TDs. Now, Mateer and Arbuckle will try to bring that high-powered offensive attack to Norman.

The Sooners had plenty of turmoil at the QB position in 2024. Jackson Arnold was benched in October before being reinserted as the starter weeks later. Arnold transferred to Auburn after the season, leaving a vacancy at the most important position for the Sooners.

Before heading to Washington State, Mateer starred for Little Elm High School in Little Elm, TX. He was rated as a 3-star prospect and the 247Sports Composite ranking had Mateer as the No. 119 QB in the 2022 class.

Mateer picked Washington State over offers from New Mexico State, Central Arkansas, and others in his original recruitment.
