Lane Kiffin isn’t mincing words about the major test that awaits Ole Miss this weekend in Athens. The No. 10 Rebels will take on No. 2 Georgia as Kiffin squares off with Kirby Smart.
Kiffin and Smart both served at Alabama under Nick Saban prior to their respective roles.
Ole Miss is currently second in the SEC West behind only No. 8 Alabama. Georgia is atop the SEC East as they aim for a historic 3-peat as national champions.
“Have a gigantic challenge in front of us. Going to play the No. 1 team in the country and playing them at their place and at night. I think the last time anyone’s beat them there was 5 years ago before COVID,” Kiffin said. “The last head coach that beat them there I can’t really call and ask because he’s now on their staff. There’s not a lot of answers out there on how to beat these guys at home. A lot of people have tried.”
Kiffin explains that it’s going to take a monumental effort from Ole Miss to defeat Georgia.
“We’ve got to have a really good week of practice. This is a very challenging combination now of having elite, phenomenal players and elite phenomenal coaches combined on the road,” Kiffin said. “There’s the trifecta of what’s the hardest thing to pull off. This would be it.”
Kiffin joked about Smart not responding in the SEC coaches group chat before effusively praising him.
“I tried to get that going Sunday and this morning. Other people have responded. He hasn’t responded yet on it. I was asking some other people if anybody has some advice. I added Drinkwitz so he’s on there. But Kirby didn’t really respond,” Kiffin said. “We haven’t played them yet. So maybe he has a rule that the week of the game he doesn’t respond to you. He’s done an unbelievable job.”
Ole Miss at Georgia is slated for 7 p.m. EST (ESPN).
