247Sports writer Brad Crawford ranked all 14 projected starting quarterbacks in the SEC Tuesday afternoon, highlighting the key position ahead of SEC Media Days next week.
The QB position has taken a slight step back compared to last season, with Hendon Hooker, Bryce Young and Stetson Bennett now out of the picture. Crawford’s2023 top 3 consists of Arkansas’ KJ Jefferson, LSU’s Jayden Daniels and Kentucky’s Devin Leary.
Below are the remainder of Crawford’s rankings:
- KJ Jefferson, Arkansas
- Jayden Daniels, LSU
- Devin Leary, Kentucky
- Joe Milton, Tennessee
- Spencer Rattler, South Carolina
- Carson Beck, Georgia
- Will Rogers, Mississippi State
- Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss
- Connor Weigman, Texas A&M
- Jalen Milroe, Alabama
- Payton Thorne, Auburn
- Brady Cook, Mizzou
- AJ Swann, Vanderbilt
- Graham Mertz, Florida
Down QB Year?
Just looking at that group of quarterbacks makes one wonder about the total ceiling of the SEC’s QB room. There’s a lot of potential in the group and any, especially above No. 11, could conceivably be poised for a breakout campaign.
Jayden Daniels is considered by many to be the true No. 1 QB in the SEC for this upcoming season after a good first year at LSU. From a pure talent standpoint, Devin Leary out of NC State could by in a great place for a strong year as well. And though there are still a lot of question marks in Joe Milton’s game, there aren’t many offenses across the country that a QB could thrive in better than Tennessee right now.
An underappreciated storyline entering 2023 is how neither Alabama nor Georgia, the 2 top teams in the conference, have seen steady QB play from either of their projected starters this season. All eyes will be on Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe to continue Georgia and Alabama’s dominance in the conference.
