People hate Duke basketball. And they’re ready to support whoever it is that beats them.
On Tuesday night, that was Stephen F. Austin, which scored a huge upset win by knocking off the No. 1 Blue Devils on the road. Senior forward Nathan Bain recorded a steal and scored the game-winning layup at the buzzer in overtime to lift the Lumberjacks to a surprising victory.
Perhaps more importantly? Bain’s shot brought awareness to a good cause.
Bain has been raising money via a GoFundMe page in an effort to help his family, who live in The Bahamas and lost nearly everything of value because of Hurricane Dorian in September. Bain’s father, who is a minister, had his church suffer extreme damage as well.
Prior to last night’s game, Bain’s GoFundMe had raised a little below $2,500. Now, he’s raised more than $60,000.
That money should certainly be a big help for his family, and it’s great to see college basketball fans pitching in to help with donations. And this is easily the best thing to come out of Tuesday’s game.
