The path is clear for the Big 12 to join the rest of the free world.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby announced on Wednesday that an NCAA vote in San Antonio has allowed the conference to schedule a conference championship game between the league’s top two teams if it so desires.

The vote was 7-2 in favor of the proposal by the Big 12 to allow conference championship football games without 12 member schools. However, Bowlsby said he’s not certain if the Big 12’s athletic directors will vote favorably enough to make the game a reality.

As it stands, the Big 12 plays a round-robin format, a nine-game schedule, where all teams in the league play each other once, so the title game would be a rematch of a regular season matchup.

Previously, the Big 12 would’ve needed to expand to 12 teams to have the championship game, but Wednesday’s decision grants the league the option to have the game regardless.

Interestingly enough, the only two conferences to vote against the proposal were the ACC and the AAC.
