Merrimack College is getting ready for its first football game at the FCS level after rising up from the Division II ranks.
However, the school is pushing the kickoff time ahead not out of excitement and eagerness, but for a public health concern.
Per a release from the school, the kickoff will take place at 3 p.m. in order to help fans avoid a mosquito-borne illness that has been found in the area:
Due to the heightened risk during evening and nighttime hours of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a mosquito-borne virus in the area, the College is rescheduling outdoor activities accordingly in an effort to minimize the possibility of exposure for our fans and participants.
The game is against Virginia University of Lynchburg. Merrimack now plays in the Northeast Conference.
