EA Sports College Football 25 shares new details in ‘gameplay deep dive’ featuring Kirk Herbstreit
EA Sports released a new video on Friday morning highlighting different gameplay features for its upcoming college football video game.
The video is narrated by ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, who takes fans through the ins-and-outs of the gameplay in EA Sports College Football 25. Here’s the full video, which is just under 5 minutes in length:

The video highlights several gameplay features that are new to this series. The list includes the wear-and-tear system, player abilities, and new playbooks. The game will also of course have a drastically different physics engine compared to the most recent release in this franchise, which came back in 2013.
Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the features outlined in the video:
Unique playbooks
The game is set to feature a unique playbook for all 134 Division I programs included in the game. Blocking schemes can also vary wildly from team-to-team. In the video above, Herbstreit highlights Oklahoma’s wide splits, Air Force’s triple option and Michigan’s “dominant ground game.”
Unique playbooks were also a feature of previous games in this franchise, but it seems as though EA Sports has put a specific emphasis on this element of the game’s development.
The gameplay deep dive also teases “new trick plays” that are sprinkled throughout various playbooks.
Wear-and-tear system
One of the more controversial elements of this game could end up being the new “wear-and-tear system.” Similar to fatigue settings in previous iterations of the game, a player’s performance will suffer as they take hits in quick succession throughout the game.
However, there are some innovations to this system in EA Sports College Football 25.
“With wear-and-tear, every hit matters,” Herbstreit explained in the video. “But not all hits have the same impact. And a single hit, like a blow to a quarterback’s throwing arm, can change everything. Just like it can in real life.
“Every hit scales differently and will have unique effects on a player’s performance as damage and fatigue add up over the course of a game. Managing wear-and-tear is critical to your team’s success, both in a single game and over the course of a season.”
Player abilities
Player abilities is also a new feature in this year’s game. Abilities will be divided into physical and mental, with players being able to carry up to 8 abilities at any one time.
EA says its goal with adding player abilities into the game is to help differentiate the elite college players from unproven freshmen.
“In contrast to the pros when superstar talent is generally balanced across the league, the player abilities in college were designed to showcase the overall discrepancy in player and team skill levels.
“Physical abilities boost attributes like breaking tackles or can provide protection from wear-and-tear. Mental abilities enhance intangible traits like leadership, pre-snap clarity at the line-of-scrimmage and staying calm under pressure.”
EA’s gameplay deep dive also includes new details on home field advantage, new passing mechanics and more.
The game is set to be released on July 19.
