ESPN FPI Rankings After Championship Weekend: Texas stays No. 1 despite loss

ESPN FPI rankings have been updated ahead of Sunday’s College Football Playoff top 25 reveal. In a few short hours, we’ll know which 12 teams will compete for the national championship.
But first, the ESPN FPI rankings… let’s just say they were… interesting.
Texas, as we all saw, lost in the SEC Championship Game to Georgia in overtime. Despite that, Texas maintains the No. 1 spot in the ESPN Football Power Index.
Georgia, meanwhile, stayed at No. 5 despite its second victory of the year over the Longhorns. And it’s not as though FPI isn’t factoring in conference title results — Arizona State rose 6 spots with its dominant win over Iowa State.
Here’s a look at the current FPI top 25:
- Texas
- Notre Dame
- Ohio State
- Alabama
- Georgia
- Oregon
- Tennessee
- Ole Miss
- Penn State
- Indiana
- Miami
- Louisville
- SMU
- South Carolina
- Clemson
- Texas A&M
- LSU
- USC
- Colorado
- Mizzou
- Florida
- Arizona State
- Iowa
- Kansas State
- Boise State
Yes, that’s still Clemson ranked below SMU, as well, despite Saturday’s results.
A total of 10 SEC teams cracked the top 25. The teams that didn’t make it were Oklahoma (26), Auburn (29), Arkansas (36), Vanderbilt (39), Kentucky (50) and Mississippi State (67).
We know the CFP rankings won’t look like the FPI rankings, but we’ll see if the committee still values Alabama and Texas the same way the Football Power Index does.
