Riding junior Clyde Edwards-Helaire to the tune of 136 yards and a score, the LSU Tigers topped the Auburn Tigers, 23-20, on October 26 in Baton Rouge to move to 8-0.
Possessing an equally unblemished record, Alabama ran past the lowly Arkansas Razorbacks, 48-7, at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
While both programs took care of their business, the Associated Press voters bumped LSU ahead of Alabama in their latest poll, released on Sunday.
With both programs idle on Saturday, the November 9 matchup in Tuscaloosa is setting up to be the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 regular season tilt since 2011. Coincidentally, that 2011 occurrence was also an Alabama-LSU bout with the Tigers winning, 9-6.
Differing from the AP Poll, ESPN’s Football Power Index ranks the Tide at No. 2 and LSU at No. 4. Anticipating the return of junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the FPI currently gives Alabama a 72.2% chance to emerge victorious.
FPI provides some background on how their results are calculated:
The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.
FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is.
Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date and the remaining schedule.
Rating and projections update daily.
Set to be the 84th meeting since 1895 between these two historic programs, the Crimson Tide lead the series, 53-25-5.
Kicking at 3:30PM ET on November 9, the game will air as part of the SEC on CBS with Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and Jamie Erdahl on the call.
