The lead up

SDS News: Kirby Smart on Deebo Samuel: ‘He’s probably the most underrated player in all of college football’

Some people across the country may not have heard about South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel. But Georgia coach Kirby Smart is far from that group.

“He’s probably the most underrated player in the country,” Smart said Monday at his weekly press conference. “I don’t know that everyone in the country knows what the SEC knows about Deebo Samuel.”

Samuel is a noted star in the SEC, especially as a special teams returner, and he was named a first-team all-SEC selection earlier this summer.

“The guy is phenomenal,” Smart continued. “Even two years ago he gave us fits in that game and then you turn around and say he has a tough injury he has to deal with, but before he had that injury he had some of the most electric kickoff returns in the country.”

SDS News: Smart, UGA players discuss playing in Williams-Brice Stadium

Defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter is excited to go on the road.

“I like playing in noisy environments,” he said. “I like the competition and the fans bring a lot of energy to games, just like our fans do. I think when everyone is screaming and yelling you just have more of that drive to do something and to do better. When you are in somebody’s own turf the odds are stacked against you and it is kind of a statement to be able to come out there and handle your business.”

SDS News: Will Muschamp downplays SEC East implications

Asked on his Sunday media teleconference if a win this week would be a step toward the SEC East crown, Muschamp again deflected any thinking that way.

“It counts as one,” he said, according to audio posted by SportsTalkSC. “We’ve got a lot of football left to play, seven conference games after this one. So it only counts as one, not one and a half. We need to put all our focus on Georgia this week. They’ve got a good football team, and I think we do as well.”

SDS News: Deebo Samuel’s first memory of Georgia rivalry: “The ground was shaking”

South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel has played in two games against Georgia, but there was one that stood out to him when he didn’t participate.

Samuel recalled the spirited atmosphere of the 2014 game in Williams-Brice Stadium, which South Carolina won 38-35. Samuel said he didn’t watch much football growing up, so he wasn’t up to speed on the Georgia series.

“I remember how loud it was and the ground was shaking,” Samuel said Tuesday. “That’s how I knew Georgia was a rivalry for us.”
