Greg McElroy spent Thursday’s episode of his Always College Football show breaking down the upcoming weekend of conference championship games.
In the SEC, the Texas Longhorns and Georgia Bulldogs will have a rematch after playing in October. The Bulldogs escaped Austin with a 30-15 victory in that matchup, so the Longhorns are looking for revenge.
McElroy sees the Longhorns getting that revenge in this game.
“I’m taking Texas in a low-scoring game,” the former QB said. “I know it’s dangerous. I know Kirby Smart will probably call everybody out after the game in victory, but I have to go with the team that I think is more complete.”
Entering this matchup, the Longhorns have an 11-1 record while the Bulldogs are sitting at 10-2. Both teams appear to be comfortably in the College Football Playoff regardless of this outcome, but the winner will get the benefit of an added bye week.
“I think Texas is more balanced, I think Texas is more complete,” explained McElroy. “I think Texas has an edge on defense, which is not something I often say.”
Texas is No. 3 in the nation in total defense while Georgia is down at No. 35. In the first matchup between these powers, turnovers were the big difference. The Longhorns turned the ball over 4 times in the loss which was the most turnovers the team had in a game this season.
On offense, the Longhorns hold the edge as well. Texas is No. 14 in total offense while the Bulldogs are No. 70.
These teams will kick off from Atlanta on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
