The college football season is upon us and in 2024 there will be 12 teams in the end competing for the ultimate prize for the first time in the history of the sport.

Former Alabama QB and ESPN analyst Greg McElroy recently predicted every team that will make the new 12-team playoff and SEC haters won’t be thrilled.

“There’s gonna be a lot of teams in the SEC that are in the Playoff discussion,” McElroy said. “They’ve always has been there (and) always will be. It’s a remarkably deep conference.”

McElroy has 5 teams from the SEC making the College Football Playoff in 2024. He believes the Georgia Bulldogs will be the No. 1 overall seed by winning the SEC Championship.

“That’s five from the SEC that I think will make the initial 12 team Playoff. It feels like a lot, if it feels like a little, let us know,” said McElroy.

“They still have the best personnel,” McElroy said about the Bulldogs. “They still have the deepest roster and they still might have the best quarterback in Carson Beck. I think George is gonna be in the mix all season as the No. 1 or No. 2 at the very worst but will they get to the SEC Championship and will be measured against the Texas Longhorns.”

The former Alabama QB has UGA knocking off the Longhorns which will make Texas the SEC runner-up and the No. 6 seed in the CFP. Beyond Texas, McElroy has his Alma mater, Alabama, taking the No. 7 seed. Finally, he believes Ole Miss will take the No. 10 spot and LSU will come in right behind the Rebels at No. 11.

“I really think the SEC’s depth and the fact that you’re gonna have a bunch of teams with pretty dang good records and resumes is going to have them well positioned.”

McElroy’s full 12-team playoff list is as follows:

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. Miami
  4. Utah
  5. Oregon
  6. Texas
  7. Alabama
  8. Penn State
  9. Notre Dame
  10. Ole Miss
  11. LSU
  12. Memphis

National championship pick

While McElroy has five SEC teams in the final 12, he predicts a Big Ten powerhouse to claim college football’s ultimate prize in 2024.

“So to have a little more fun, I’ll tell you my national championship pick,” McElroy concluded.

“I’m taking the Ohio State Buckeyes to win the national championship in 2024. They have, I think a super dynamic run game, the defense has a chance to be elite, and I still believe that the offensive line, even though there are question marks, I still think the offensive line is gonna be plenty good enough with Chip Kelly calling the plays and the run game to be able to complement what they want to be on the perimeter with super talented weapons that they have wide receivers. The Ohio State buckeyes over the Georgia Bulldogs for the national title.”
