How Lane Kiffin helped Jon Gruden get reinstated in Buccaneers’ Ring-of-Honor
Lane Kiffin played a role in getting Jon Gruden reinstated into the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Ring-of-Honor, according to a report.
The Bucs announced the decision to bring Gruden back into the Ring-of-Honor on Thursday afternoon. Gruden, who led the franchise to a Super Bowl as head coach during his tenure, was barred from the Ring-of-Honor back in 2021.
Here’s the official statement from the team:
Jon Gruden was initially inducted into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor based on his many accomplishments during his seven seasons as our head coach and he remains a significant figure in the history of our franchise,” the team said in a statement. “Upon further reflection, we have decided to reinstate him into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor.
As for how Lane Kiffin is involved, ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared those details on Thursday afternoon. Schefter reports that members of the Glazer family — who own the Bucs — were touched by a story told by Kiffin at the celebration of life for his father, Monte Kiffin, who was Gruden’s DC for the Bucs’ Super Bowl win in 2003.
The story “revolved around Monte’s strong belief in giving people second chances,” per Schefter’s reporting. It also led to Gruden watching a Bucs game from the Glazer’s suite in 2024.
Gruden was initially inducted into the Bucs’ Ring-of-Honor back in 2017.
