Report: Kansas City informed former Missouri WR Jeremy Maclin of release in disgraceful fashion
The NFL’s cut-throat nature is one of the harsh realities of the league’s business side. Even when viewed through that lens, the way Kansas City notified Jeremy Maclin of his release is pretty heartless.
A former star at Missouri, Maclin has achieved success during his professional career. The established veteran sat down for a Skype interview with Pro Football Talk on Thursday and explained just how he came to find out that he no longer had a job.
“(I found out) through a voicemail,” Maclin told PFT. “[From G.M.] John Dorsey. I was upset, I was shocked. Apparently, they had been trying to trade me for two or three months. Which who knows if that’s true or not? I would just think that . . . a guy who is going into his ninth year would know if he’s being shopped or not. It is what it is. I still have respect for Big Red, still have respect for the organization. I’m not going to bad mouth anybody or talk any dirt on anybody; It was an unfortunate situation. They felt like they didn’t want me as a player anymore, so it is what it is. I’m happy with where I am right now, and I think that might be the last time I talk about what I call my former life. So I don’t think I want to talk about that anymore.”
Maclin was released just two years after signing a five-year, $55 million contract with Kansas City.
Less than two weeks after he was cut by the Chiefs, Maclin signed a two-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens. Although he stayed away from criticizing his former organization, it’s clear that Maclin was bothered by the way Kansas City informed him of his release.
In his two seasons with the Chiefs, Maclin caught 131 passes for 1,624 yards and 10 touchdowns. At Missouri, Maclin was a two-time All-American and one of the most versatile players in college football. He set the NCAA record for all-purpose yards by a freshman when he gained 2,776 yards in 2007.
