Kirk Herbstreit clarifies comments about players not loving football

Kirk Herbstreit made waves during ESPN’s College GameDay on Saturday morning, saying he thinks this wave of players opting out shows that this era of players “doesn’t love football.”
As you might expect, Herbstreit took some heat on social media from people who strongly disagreed with that take.
Thus, ahead of the Rose Bowl, Herbstreit took to Twitter to clarify his comments. He said he was wrong to lump all players together into one category:
Just wanted to clarify some of my comments from earlier today. Of course some players love the game the same today as ever. But some don’t. I’ll always love the players of this game and sorry if people thought I generalized or lumped them all into one category. pic.twitter.com/PS9Pu5rcoo

Herbstreit’s middle-of-the-road stance is probably more accurate. But, non-Playoff bowl games are always going to have opt-outs with players who have Round 1 NFL Draft potential.
We’ll see if the NCAA does anything to address that issue moving forward, but until players are incentivized to play in bowls, nothing will change.
