In a possible Heisman Trophy preview, Alabama RB Derrick Henry was named winner of the Maxwell Award as the Collegiate Player of the Year on Thursday night in Atlanta.
Henry beat Clemson QB Deshaun Watson and Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey, the other two finalists for the Heisman.
Here’s a look at the three finalists:
RB DERRICK HENRY, ALABAMA
Henry, a junior, has rushed for 1,986 yards and 23 touchdowns and almost six yards per carry while leading the Crimson Tide into the College Football Playoff.
Henry rushed for 1,253 yards and 11 TDs in his last six SEC games, including 271 yards on 46 carries against in-state rival Auburn. In his three-year career, Henry has rushed for 3,358 yards and 37 TDs.
QB DESHAUN WATSON, CLEMSON
Watson, a sophomore, led Clemson to a 13-0 record. He threw for 3,512 yards and 30 TDs with 11 interceptions while completing almost 70 percent of his passes.
Watson also rushed for 887 yards and 11 TDs, averaging 5.44 yards per carry.
RB CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY, STANFORD
McCaffrey was an all-around threat. The Stanford sophomore rushed for 1,847 yards and eight TDs and caught 41 passes for 540 yards and four TDs. He returned 36 kickoffs for 1,042 yards, a 28.94-yard average, and one TD.
