Report: Houston to announce West Virginia’s Dana Holgorsen as new head coach

It didn’t take Houston long to replace former head coach Major Applewhite.
The Cougars fired Applewhite Saturday after two years, and now, it appears Houston already has its next head coach. UH is expected to hire WVU’s Dana Holgorsen and announce the hire on New Year’s Day, per SB Nation’s Steven Godfrey. Houston will give Holgorsen a five-year, $20 million deal.
Holgorsen’s $4 million per year will make him the highest paid Group of 5 coach in history, actually giving him a raise from $3.6 million at WVU.
The timing is important, too, because Houston was waiting on Holgorsen’s buyout to reduce to $1 million.
Holgorsen is very familiar with Houston, as he was the OC and QB coach there from 2008-09. He’s been the head coach at West Virginia for eight years and finishes his time in Morgantown with an overall record of 61-41.
