On Monday, it was reported that the first coaching change of the 2020 FBS season had already taken place, as Southern Miss coach Jay Hopson was expected to step down.
As you probably know, it doesn’t take the coaching carousel long to get spinning, so there are already some reports out there about potential candidates to replace Hopson.
On Monday afternoon, Stadium’s Brett McMurphy tweeted out a list of 7 candidates, including former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze and current Georgia OC Todd Monken:
Possible Southern Miss candidates: Liberty’s Hugh Freeze (USM grad); Baylor OC Larry Fedora & Georgia OC Todd Monken (both former USM coaches), UTSA DC Tyrone Nix (USM grad/former USM assistant), Tulane OC Will Hall, Memphis OC Kevin Johns & USM interim coach Scotty Walden

It’s obviously still very early in the season, so it remains to be seen what sort of timeline Southern Miss will have for the coaching search.
If the Golden Eagles are willing to wait until after the season, they may have some more of a chance of landing one of these coaches for the vacancy.
