Rick Neuheisel was at SEC Media Days in Nashville this week, and went on with Dan Patrick on Friday to recap the week and look ahead to the biggest storyline of the season.
“Can Nick (Saban) catch Kirby (Smart),” said Neuheisel, an analyst with CBS Sports. “Kirby has gone past, the apprentice has gone past the master. Can Nick now reclaim it and is that really the challenge for Nick because here’s Brian Kelly having just arrived on the scene in this menagerie of action at LSU speaking the Southern accent. So can Brian Kelly go past Nick? It’s kind of a race right there, and then who’s in position No. 4. Who’s going to be that is it the Arkansas Chug-a-Bug from the old days. Is it Ole Miss? It is South Carolina, Shane Beamer looks like he’s got a little momentum with Spencer Rattler. And certainly Tennessee has flexed. Joe Milton was as impressive as anybody I saw on the hoof last year. He had a great Orange Bowl, can he parlay that into a great year.”
At the end of the interview, Patrick, who earlier in the week announced his retirement effective in 4 1/2 years, asked Neuheisel if Saban would outlast him coaching.
“You are going to be doing this and Nick is going to be playing more golf, I think the next time Nick lifts a trophy, it’s his last,” Neuheisel said.
