With a pair of October Saturdays behind us, we’re getting into the second half of the 2023 college football regular season. Week 7 is in the books, and ESPN has updated its power rankings. Six SEC squads make the latest top 25.
While the ESPN Analytics computers and broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit docked Georgia for how it won against Vanderbilt, the staff writers kept the Bulldogs at No. 1. UGA defeated Vanderbilt 37-20 to improve to 7-0 heading into a bye week.
Alabama picked up a closer-than-expected victory over Arkansas but was not dropped in the ESPN power rankings. The Crimson Tide stayed at No. 11 after beating the Razorbacks 24-21 to get to 6-1 on the season.
Tennessee’s win over Texas A&M raised some concerns about Joe Milton, but the outcome of the defensive battle provided a bump in the power rankings. UT is up 4 spots to No. 14 after winning 20-13.
Ole Miss was at No. 15 in last week’s power rankings. That spot was taken by Notre Dame after the Irish’s big win over USC. The Rebels dropped to No. 16 in the new rankings.
LSU moved up with a lopsided rivalry win over Auburn. Brian Kelly’s team checks in at No. 19 after winning the Tiger Bowl 48-18.
Another Tiger team received a bump. Mizzou has moved up to No. 20 after defeating Kentucky 38-21 in Lexington. UK was No. 23 last week but has dropped out after picking up a second loss.
Here’s where the SEC teams slot in the latest ESPN power rankings:
- No. 1 – Georgia
- No. 11 – Alabama
- No. 14 – Tennessee
- No. 16 – Ole Miss
- No. 19 – LSU
- No. 20 – Missouri
