Sun Belt program pauses football practices due to COVID-19 cluster

With the college football season inching closer, one Sun Belt program has been forced to hit the pause button. Appalachian State announced Tuesday night that football practices have been suspended indefinitely.
According to App State’s announcement, 11 people associated with the football team have tested positive – 7 students and 4 staffers. The school began its fall semester on Monday.
App State is coming off of a 13-1 season capped by a New Orleans Bowl win over UAB. The Mountaineers finished No. 18 in the Coaches Poll and No. 19 in the AP Top 25. Head coach Eliah Drinkwitz left App State after the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game to take the Missouri job. Shawn Clark is now the program’s head coach.
App State is scheduled to open the season at home against Charlotte on Sept. 12.
Appalachian State University says in an email to students, faculty and staff that it has identified a COVID -19 cluster associated with the football team.
11 total: seven students and four staffers.
