Now that we’re (finally!) moving into the meat of the SEC schedule, the conference’s historic rivalries are going to be at the national forefront. Each week, we’ll take a look back at the history of the week’s best matchup and look back at some of the more memorable games. This week: Florida at No. 3 Alabama.

All-time record: Alabama leads, 22-14

Current streak: Alabama, won 3

Longest win streaks: Alabama 8; Florida 4

Big moments in Florida-Alabama history

  • 1964; No. 3 Alabama 17, No. 9 Florida 14: Steve Spurrier led the Gators into Tuscaloosa to take on the Crimson Tide for Alabama’s homecoming game. Spurrier helped stake the Gators to a 14-7 lead before Alabama made a late-game charge to take a 17-14 lead. Spurrier drove the Gators down the field, but Florida missed a game-tying field goal.
  • 1992 SEC Championship; No. 2 Alabama 28, No. 12 Florida 21: Florida and Alabama met in the very first SEC Championship game. Gene Stallings’ Tide grabbed the win on a late pick six, defeating Spurrier and the Gators en route to the national championship.
  • 1993 SEC Championship; No. 9 Florida 28, No. 16 Alabama 13: The Gators got revenge for the previous year, with quarterback Terry Dean taking MVP honors. The Gators went on to win the Sugar Bowl, while Alabama had to retroactively forfeit all but their bowl game after a player was found to have received improper benefits from an agent.
  • 2008 SEC Championship; No. 2 Florida 31, No. 1 Alabama 20: Nick Saban led the Crimson Tide to a  12-0 record in his second season, but ran into Tim Tebow’s Gators. The reigning Heisman winner threw 3 TDs to lead the Gators to the win and, a few weeks later, a national championship.
  • 2009 SEC Championship; No. 2 Alabama 32, No. 1 Florida 13: Saban and Co. got their revenge a year later when these two teams met at 12-0 in Atlanta. Mark Ingram pounded in 3 TD runs and ran for 113 yards. The Tide would go on to win Saban’s first national championship at Alabama over
