Jill Freeze and Megan Mullen shared their personal experiences as wives of college football coaches with the Clarion-Ledger Friday.
Freeze, who is married to Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze, revealed their early struggles when her husband was a coach at Lambuth in Jackson, Tennessee. She said their family stayed in a rental unit ironically referred to as “the palace,” which forced their three daughters to sleep on cots because the space was too small for full-size beds.
Freeze also revealed that the family ate every meal on paper plates and used plastic utensils, which led to Coach Freeze breaking his fork in a steak. She also discussed the harsh criticism her husband receives, including a Twitter user saying he wished the coach would die in a car crash.
“It makes it hard,” Jill said. “I signed up for it. I knew I was marrying a coach. They were born into it.”
Mullen told the newspaper that there were enough funny moments to write a book about. She also claimed that laughter is a tool of survival for the spouses of college coaches.
The former sports broadcaster understood the nature of her husband’s pack-and-go career. However, she admitted to underselling just how stressful coaching was.
“Before I met Dan, the craziest profession I thought existed was TV,” said Megan Mullen. “The only job that I can say is more dysfunctional is absolutely 100 percent the coaching world.”
