Reggie Northrup received loads of attention on Friday after a video appeared to show him with a cigarette in his mouth during practice.
Northrup, who plays for the Houston Gamblers in the USFL, spoke out after the practice video became popular on social media.
“Alright everybody, I know all y’all are wondering where the cigarette come from,” he said. “But listen, I do not smoke cigarettes, first and foremost, do not smoke cigarettes. But this cigarette is a prop cigarette, it’s not real, but it’s an attitude. It’s a symbolism and an attitude. It’s an attitude that I come out here on this football field and it’s time to work today.”
He also tweeted about the issue, and said, “like the old school ballers in the 60s-70s, they were some of the toughest, meanest S.O.Bs on that field making plays after dragging a whole cigarette. Ps, you can buy these from Spencer’s in your local mall.”
Northrup has already made headlines with an 87-yard scoop-and-score fumble return for a touchdown earlier this season.
