Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith suffered a gruesome sack on Sunday when a pair of Houston Texans sandwiched him and caused his legs to buckle underneath.
Smith was carted off the field after the play, and for Redskins and football fans, it was eerily similar to Joe Theismann’s injury on Nov. 18, 1985 — 33 years to the day — when he was tackled by Lawrence Taylor.
It was an especially unfortunate play for the Redskins, who lead the NFC East with a 6-3 record.
At the end of the third quarter, the Redskins trailed the Texans 20-14. Smith was 12-for-27 passing for 135 yards and two interceptions. He was replaced by Colt McCoy.
