Dowell Loggains says Spencer Rattler has freedom to change plays: ‘It takes guts’
Dowell Loggains had some kind words to say about Spencer Rattler on Wednesday. He talked about what it has been like giving the South Carolina QB more freedom when it comes to play calling.
Loggains is taking over at OC this season after Marcus Satterfield left to join Matt Rhule at Nebraska. When talking about giving Rattler the freedom to change plays, Loggains stated “it takes guts.”
“It’s a guts thing. It’s one thing to say like ‘Hey, I’m going to change the play’. It’s one thing to say in the media room, but it’s another thing to go and do it. It takes guts to do that in front of your team and 10 other guys in the huddle. You’ve got to be able to give him enough leash and then reel him back in sometimes.”
Rattler had one of his best seasons since coming to South Carolina football last year. Rattler had 3,026 yards passing with 21 total touchdowns.
It’ll be interesting to see how giving Rattler more freedom in play calling goes. The Gamecocks are coming off of an 8-5 finish to the 2022 season.
South Carolina kicks off the 2023 campaign against North Carolina on Sept. 2. Game time will be at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
