South Carolina beats out Virginia Tech, Louisville for 4-star in-state TE

South Carolina beat out the likes of Virginia Tech, Louisville and Cincinnati for a pledge from 4-star tight end Jamel Howse, who hails from Newberry, South Carolina

Howse attends Newbery High School, in-between Greenville and Columbia. He’s considered to be the No. 170 overall prospect in the Class of 2026 by 247 sports, as well as the No. 9 TE and No. 2 player out of South Carolina.

Howse is also South Carolina’s 2nd commitment of the day. The Gamecocks landed a verbal pledge from Rock Hill, SC receiver Malik Clark about an hour before Howse followed suit.

South Carolina is doing very well for itself on the recruiting trail. The Gamecocks boast the No. 14 overall class in 2026, and that’s not including the addition of Clark from earlier Saturday morning. With that addition added, the Gamecocks should be pushing the top 10.

Howse is now South Carolina’s highest rated recruit and the 3rd top-300 prospect added to the 2026 cycle, joining Clark and Georgia-based linebacker Rodney Colton Jr.
