Bobby Bowden passed away peacefully early Sunday morning from his Killearn Estates home, according to the Tallahassee Democrat’s Jim Henry.
In the weeks leading up to his death, Bowden was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and his son, Terry Bowden, revealed it was pancreatic cancer. Terry recently took a leave of absence from Louisiana-Monroe — where he’s the head coach — to be with his father in his last days.
Bowden died peacefully at 5:08 a.m. surrounded by his wife and their 6 children.
The long-time Florida State coach built the program into a powerhouse, and his excellence changed FSU and the SEC forever. During his tenure at FSU from 1976 through 2009, Bowden finished with an overall record of 377-129-4. He won 12 ACC Championships and 2 National Championships. He had many legendary battles with Florida and head coach Steve Spurrier during his tenure.
Bowden won numerous awards during his career, including the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year and the Walter Camp Coach of the Year Award.
