Miami escaped with a 38-34 win over Virginia Tech on Friday night.

Virginia Tech appeared to win the game as time expired with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Kyron Drones to Da’Quan Felton. However, after a lengthy replay review, the call on the field of a Hokies touchdown was overturned.

Here’s a replay of the controversial finish:

Officials did not immediately provide an explanation for why the call was overturned by replay review. However, there is an angle that appears to show the ball moving before the catch was completed by Felton:

Miami now moves to 5-0 on the season and avoids losing its ACC opener as a 17-point favorite.

Cam Ward had a big 4th quarter that included the go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:57 remaining. Ward finished the night 24-of-38 with 343 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

The replay booth overturning the call on the field was surprising for ESPN rules analyst Matt Austin, who said he believed there was not sufficient evidence to overrule the initial call.
