Mike Norvell hammered on social media after stunning admission in postgame press conference

Mike Norvell’s FSU honeymoon is just about over following the brutal last-second loss to Jacksonville State.
The Gamecocks had the ball with 6 seconds left and down 3 points at their own 41-yard-line, and the unthinkable happened. Jacksonville State ran 4 verticals down the field — yes, the one you likely used to run all the time on the NCAA Football game, and FSU wasn’t ready for it.
What did the Seminoles defense think was coming? How were they not in a better coverage?
Mike Norvell was asked that question during his postgame press conference, and his explanation only made things worse.
#FSU HC Mike Norvell on final play of game: “Ran a two deep man under, tried to get pressure on the quarterback. They still had one time out, so we didn’t go to immediate prevent.”

Mind you, there were only 6 seconds left in the game. Jacksonville State had no other option than to throw a Hail Mary. Going into overtime against the Gamecocks is much better than taking the loss.
So, as you might imagine, that comment really raised some eyebrows. The head coach’s job is to get his team into the best possible position to succeed, and making that defensive play-call wasn’t hard. However, the Seminoles, somehow, completely botched. it.
Here’s some of the social media reaction to Norvell’s comments:
I have my lil football questions from time to time. Bc I don’t get everything I just love the game…but Norvell…EYE KNEW BETTER THAN THIS. This makes no sense. It was 6 seconds left!!!!!!!!! https://t.co/hduR6beYv1

You often hear about coaches going to the prevent too early. May be the first time I’ve heard about going to the prevent too late. https://t.co/YR7qy4jacm

So you put your defense in a spot that opens yourself up to the only way you can get beat because you’re afraid of Jacksonville St kicking a 40-50 yard FG to force OT? You’re afraid to go to OT against Jacksonville st? Man! https://t.co/osXhdUtPhl

Mike, they had 6 seconds from their own 40! You could put 5 guys on your 40 and 5 guys on the 15 and rush one! Or your player good play tackle football and TACKLE! https://t.co/swGEiZWPqX
