Texas A&M checks in at No. 23 in the first AP poll of the season but the Aggies will be without a key offensive piece for the 2023 campaign.

Texas A&M coach confirmed on Monday that sophomore tight end Donovan Green sustained an ACL injury. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Green sustained the injury during the first scrimmage of preseason camp.

Green is coming off a freshman season in which he had 22 receptions, 233 receiving yards, and 2 touchdowns.

Fisher said he’s doing his best to keep Green’s spirits high while he embarks on the road to recovery.

“I remember an ACL when you were my age, you probably would never play again. Now they come back a lot of times even stronger. It can be very disheartening but remember it’s a long thing and he’s a young guy,” Fisher said. “You can come back from those things and there’s been huge numbers of guys that have done it. You’ve always got to keep that in their head. I think you’ve got to keep them engaged in your team.”

Fisher believes the time away from the field can still serve a valuable purpose in Green’s maturation.

“Sometimes they’ve got to sit back in practice like a coach and be by the coaches. When you see things through a coaches eye it’s like your parents. You used to think they nagged you to death or coaches are nagging you and driving you…” Fisher said. “That’s what he’s got to do and we’re going to keep him engaged. You hate that for him but unfortunately that’s part of anything you can do.”

Fisher is confident in the depth of the tight end core to compensate for the loss of Green.

“Been very pleased with that. We held Max [Wright] out of the scrimmage. He had a toe. He was banged up a little bit. He’ll be ready to go. Jake Johnson has had a really good camp. Theo [Melin Ohrstrom] caught I think 8 balls in the scrimmage. He’s really starting to grow and emerge,” Fisher said. “Jaden Platt is another young guy that’s gotten a lot of reps in there that’s doing well. You hate losing Donovan. That’s a really experienced and really good player but these guys have had really good camps.”

Texas A&M starts the season with a contest against New Mexico on Sept. 2.
