Bob Stoops misspells Josh Heupel’s name in note ahead of return to Norman

Bob Stoops fired Josh Heupel from his role as Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator in 2014.

For the first time since, Heupel is returning to Norman on Saturday as head coach of Tennessee. The Vols and Sooners are both ranked and should put on quite the show in a hostile environment. And folks, you’d be kidding yourself if you think this is “just another game” for Heupel.

On Sunday night Stoops posted a note on social media saying that he will be declining interviews for Saturday’s upcoming matchup from both school’s media outlets. In doing so, he offered his respect for both Heupel and current Oklahoma coach Brent Venables.

One problem – he misspelled “Josh Huepel’s” name.

Just a typo? Probably. Fuel to the fire? Absolutely.

Tennessee has been even better than anticipated thus far in 2024, especially on defense. The Vols have yet to allow an offensive touchdown and their front 7 is as dangerous as any in college football. But in fairness, Tim Banks’ unit gets its first real test against the Sooners as NC State – Tennessee’s best win of the year – is still struggling heavily along the line of scrimmage.

The Vols offense is humming through Week 3 under redshirt freshman QB Nico Iamaleava and RB Dylan Sampson. Iamaleava is akin to the Terminator on the field – he’s not fazed by anything and the former 5-star is deadly accurate. He’s shown off an ability to hit the deep ball lately, too.

Oklahoma has struggled in recent weeks against competition they should handle with relative ease. The Sooners looked good against a consistent Tulane team last week, but very nearly lost to a bad Houston team the week prior.

Regardless, there’s plenty of talent in Oklahoma’s camp too. The Sooners have a 5-star talent of their own under center in Jackson Arnold, who has looked the part through his first 3 starts.

Vols vs. Sooners is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
