Chaz Lanier put together a monster first half for Tennessee on Saturday as the No. 6 Volunteers are in College Station to face No. 7 Texas A&M.

The Vols entered the day winners of 4 of their last 5 after dropping 3 of the previous 4. And at the break, the Vols led the Aggies, 36-32.

That’s thanks to the play of Lanier, who posted 22 points in the opening frame. One of his highlights came with just under 7 minutes to go as he flushed down a big dunk to cut the Aggies’ lead to 22-20:

Lanier already has the highest-scoring game by a Volunteer this season with 29. For context, Mississippi State‘s Josh Hubbard is the top scorer in a conference play, dropping 38 on Alabama on Jan. 30 in a losing cause. The most points scored by an SEC player this season is 42, set by Texas guard Jordan Pope in a 98-62 win over New Orleans on Dec. 19.

Meanwhile, A&M is looking to avoid a 2nd straight loss. It fell at Mississippi State 70-54 on Tuesday as Wade Taylor IV was held to just 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting. The Aggies turned in over 19 times in that one.
