Jerod Mayo is calling it quits.
The former Tennessee linebacker announced his retirement from the NFL on social media on Tuesday evening. He spent all eight of his seasons with the New England Patriots.
His decision comes exactly one week before his 30th birthday.
The Hampton, Va., native was taken with the 10th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was a two-time Pro Bowler and was named a First-Team All-Pro in 2010. He was also named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2008.
Mayo led the Patriots in tackles in three consecutive seasons from 2008 to 2010, and his 175 combined tackles in 2010 led the NFL.
