Texas was overmatched through the first half of Saturday’s game against in-state rival and No. 13 Texas A&M. At one point, the Aggies led things by more than 20 points and appeared destined for an easy blowout.
With 17:07 left in the game, Wade Taylor IV nailed a 3-pointer to give A&M a 22-point lead at 51-29. However, the Longhorns would not be deterred. Texas came storming back behind a 30-point outing from Tre Johnson, but it was Tramon Mark who delivered the dagger.
With 10 seconds left, Mark took his man off the dribble and delivered a floating left-handed layup for the 70-69 lead. Taylor would get a halfcourt heave off ahead of the buzzer, but it was no good for the Aggies.
It is not the first time Mark has daggered the Aggies. He delivered a game-winner vs. A&M last season, only as a member of Arkansas at the time.
According to Jon Rothstein, the 22-point lost lead for A&M is the largest lead the program has squandered in a defeat under Buzz Williams. It also goes down as the 11th straight home win for Texas vs. the in-state rival Aggies.
Texas closed the game on a 10-2 push after A&M had re-pushed its lead to 67-60 with 2 and a half minutes remaining. The Longhorns scored the final 7 points of the game across the final 1:25 of game time.
The SEC is already deep and lethal, and Saturday’s wild comeback is just the latest example of the treacherous nature of league play this season.
