Texas is looking to add a former Big 12 head coach to the coaching staff of Steve Sarkisian this offseason, according to multiple reports.

According to Matt Zenitz with CBS Sports/247 Sports, Texas is targeting former West Virginia head coach Neal Brown for a role on Sarkisian’s staff. The specific role remains to be seen, but it would be a key addition and an interesting bit of Texas Longhorn news this offseason.

While with the Mountaineers, Brown went 37-35 across 6 seasons but did not return to the program after going 6-6 in 2024. He also had a 35-16 record as the head coach at Troy from 2015-18.

Brown has previously been in SEC football as an assistant. A former player at Kentucky under Hal Mumme, Brown was the first offensive coordinator for Mark Stoops during the 2013-14 seasons with the Wildcats.

It remains to be seen what Brown would bring to the table for Texas, but he is a veteran coach with extensive work as an OC and quarterbacks coach in his career. After back-to-back trips to the College Football Playoff under Quinn Ewers, the focus for Sarkisian and his staff moving forward will be the development of Arch Manning while pursuing a return to the Playoff.

On a larger scale, the Longhorns remain in search of their first national title since 2005 with the upcoming season marking the 20th anniversary of that team.
